Why do southern people use the rebel flag?

When i see a rebel flag, i think of racism. But can you really blame me? It was made because of slavery, and also used frequently during the civil rights era to show hostility towards black people and other minorities. I was born in Palm Beach, Florida and moved to Georgia when i was seven, Im hispanic, so im definatly not a southern girl never will be. I have no problem with southern ppl, but in almost every front lawn, bumper sticker, tshirt, and fb cover has a rebel flag on it. I know it may just be "Country pride", but it also may be something else... I have no idea, so i want to educate myself instead of assuming, so why?

I have been to Georgia. You are doing some SERIOUS exaggeration in saying that these flags are "in almost every yard..." No one respects a person who uses hyperbole to make a point.
