How does rotten tomatoes rating system works?

Postby ramzi58 » October 31st, 2011, 2:07 pm

I have the iPhone app flixstar(with rotten tomatoes) it shows the movie reviews. I don't understand how the rating system works.
Ex. Lion King 3D rating is 89% with a red tomato. That means positive review.
Spy kids stuck in time(whatever they call it)
26% with a rottens squashed tomato. Does that mean 26% negative or 26%positive?
Another Ex. Real steel 59% with the rotten squashed tomato. Was it 59% positive or negative? I'm like confused. If it was negative then spy kids would have 84% res tomato. Not 26% squashed rotten tomato. So how does the rating works?

How does rotten tomatoes rating system works?

Postby garry » October 31st, 2011, 2:15 pm

The % system is based on the number of positive reviews for a movie against the number of negative reviews. So whatever the % is, is the number of positive reviews a movie has

Spy Kids is 26% positive, and because it is only 26 it is labelled as "rotten", and given a rotten tomato, while The Lion King is 89% positive, and because it has a high rating it is labelled as "Fresh"
