i'm going to get 3 of of them http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3953743&lmdn=Live+Pet&f=PAD%2FpsNotAvailInUS%2FNo (medium size).
and for them to chase around (and hopefully not going to kill them) i'm going to get 6 or less tiger barb http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3954140&f=PAD%2FpsNotAvailInUS%2FNo (medium size).
i have 3 tall plants http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3054541&f=PAD%2FpsNotAvailInUS%2FNo (large size).
should i get some real plants also or is fake plants ok?
i don't know if you need this info but i have a 30 gallon tank with a 50 watt heater (for up to a 20 gallon tank). should i get a hotter heater or an aerator?
thanks for your help

get as small of fish you can...letting the fish grow up together may REDUCE the aggression. you can never control aggression. fish bully other fish because of biology. it just happens and theres nothing we can do, they are usually just setting up their hierarchy. it happens in the animal kingdom.
i wouldnt put tiget barbs in with them, and if you do id keep it to 4 or 5.
GET REAL PLANTS! i cannot stress this enough. all aquariums are ecosystems in a box. a box cant be an ecosystem without a waste treatment system. plants absorb ammonia and ammonium and nitrates as well as metals in your water. some cichlids uproot plants so i would reccomend getting a java fern or anubias nana and attaching it to a piece of driftwood with a rubber band. you can also do this with java moss. live plants reduce a ton of problems in your tank and you are crazy not to have some in a tank.
get a bigger heater. your electric bill will be wayyy higher if you use that heater. its always best to have a strong heater run for 5 minutes than a weak heater run for 20.
get a sponge filter too. this increases biological filtration and cichlids need a lot of filteration. put an airstone in it and you will be fine.
if i could make a suggestion though, i would get south american cichlids before african. SA cichlids are a lot cooler in my opinion. go to animal-world.com and learn that website inside and out. they have tons of info on cichlids
