Does cold weather kill bugs like gnats?

Postby edward83 » November 4th, 2011, 3:20 am

I brought some herbs indoors because the first frost already came through plus I want them inside.

They can survive outside though.

However, I noticed these stupid gnats laying larvae in the soil.

And now there's predatory mites eating them.

But I want them all gone.

The herbs will tolerate frost and are winter hardy, should I put them outside for a night and let them freeze?

Will that kill off all the bugs?

The mites will freeze.
The flying gnats will too.
Letting the soil dry will dehydrate the larvae and eggs.

it will kill most of the insects, but some of the larvae will survive to start up again when warm weather returns...re-potting into clean soil before bringing them in would be the best solution.
