Trees and plants outside have the wind to blow them that is good for them. And the noise might be good for them. Your grandpa might be right. I have always heard that talking to a plant helps them.
The site below has the basics in caring for bonsai. And there's a species guide.

The answer from Luther is very good involving the physical nature of the bonsai's treatment, especially the misting of the tree. However, the bonsai -- like the fig tree and some other types of tree -- actually is "social" and apparently benefits from friendly noise around. You don't have to talk, though. If you play music on a regular basis, either personally or on a stereo, the tree will probably enjoy it.

no. thats a myth but you still can if you want to.
some helpful things to do are
make sure the soil is always moist but not soggy.
get a spray bottle to mist the leaves
if it isn't doing well while trying to get it back to health cut off shoots and/or flowers. they take the trees energy away from getting better
change the dirt if you get bugs
the rest of the stuff you should find in a bonsai care book if you care to learn more.

Talking to plants is useful, they have the ability to hear you and respond also, even you have the ability to hear what they say but unconsciously. They can tell you a lot from their experience on other trees and plants, they can guide you to medicinal plants and how or where to apply. It is helpful to meditate near your Bonsai 10-20 min per day.
