Fast growing tree to Bonsai and a good Species of upright Juniper to bonsai.?

Postby hlithtun » May 19th, 2013, 3:01 pm

Im only a new comer to the Bonsai world and im after a name of a Juniper thats stands upright as I have one that runs along the ground. Im also after a few names of plants that would be good and fast growing to bonsai. I live in a tropical enviroment (Cairns, top of Australia) it gets hot and humid so I need something that wont die on me.
Any help would be great. Thanks.

Fast growing tree to Bonsai and a good Species of upright Juniper to bonsai.?

Hi,

There are two most common Juniper species used for bonsai: Juniperus chinesis and Juniperus communis. They both perform for upright styles.

For tropical regions, one of the most used species is Ficus (many kinds of Ficus). They are strong and fast growers... Other advice I always give is to look in the nature, what species do you natively have?
One specie I like and should also be ok is the well known Zelkova.

Hope this give a little help.

Many people think of tiny little Japanese trees cut and pruned to a miniature size but literally speaking Bonsai means 'plant in a tray' and while they are smaller than their wild counterparts they don't have to be a couple of inches tall; they can be grown in a pot in the garden and will be smaller than their wild counterparts.
